Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick Review

Too Faced recently released their Melted Matte liquid lipsticks and being the lipstick addict that I am, I couldn't resist trying them out.  I showed incredible restraint, though, and only bought one; I expect my Medal of Fiscal Responsibility to arrive in the mail any day now.

There are 17 shades available on the Sephora website. The Too Faced site offers an 18th, exclusive, shade.  The shades range from a pale nude to a deep black cherry with a few surprises in between (bright orange or sapphire blue, anyone?)  I opted for a dusty mauve shade called Queen B.
Queen B in all her mauve-y glory.

The packaging is reminiscent of Too Faced's original Melted lipsticks but is a see through acrylic which I prefer over opaque packaging.  The applicator is a standard doe foot; I've found that I get enough product on the wand that I don't need to dip back into the tube when applying.  There is a very slight chemically/lipsticky smell to the product but it's faint and I can't smell it once the lipstick is applied.

The pigmentation is intense and I haven't had problems with patchy or streaky application.  The formula reminds me of the Anastasia Beverly Hills and Colourpop liquid lipsticks: a thick liquid, not moussey like the Tarte lip paints.  The lipstick dries quickly and, at least the one I have, is transfer- and kiss-proof.  I've seen reviews of some of the darker shades in which they did not completely dry and some minor transferring occurred but that hasn't been my experience.

When I tested the wear time, I applied a thin layer of a transparent lip primer from Milani Cosmetics  (available available Walmart) before applying the lipstick.  As with any liquid to matte liquid lipstick, there was some drying of the lips but it was very minimal.  I would compare these in feel to the Anastasia version.  I do not find it to be uncomfortable at all and it felt for the first couple of hours like I had nothing on my lips at all.

I have to say: the wear time is hella impressive.  I applied it at 8:00am.  The second picture was taken at 11:00am after I had finished my coffee; there's virtually no discernible wear.  I ate chicken and rice for lunch and took a picture after at 2:00pm; the inner part of my lips showed some wear but the lipstick was still largely intact.  I had a client meeting at 3 which required about an hour of talking.  The lipstick started breaking down and I could feel it getting a bit flaky.  The final picture was taken around 4:00pm and you can see that it was ready for reapplication.  But I appreciate that it faded gradually and didn't leave the dreaded ring around the lips.

I wiped off the flaky bits and reapplied over the remaining lipstick and it wore like a fresh application.  Not all liquid lipsticks will do that. I find that my Colourpop Ultra Mattes will crumble if I try to layer them.

Fair warning: oils will break the lipstick down.  I wore Queen B again today and had a grilled cheese for lunch; I had to reapply.

Overall, I think these lipsticks are worth the $25 price tag and I have no buyer's remorse.
